Sa Mata Grossa

The setting

Mallorca, from its quiet centre

Sa Mata Grossa sits inland, just outside Búger. Far from the bustle of the coast, yet with everything within reach.

Sa Mata Grossa

Búger

A small village above the plain

Búger is one of the smallest villages in Mallorca. It stands on a low hill, with the Serra de Tramuntana outlined behind it and the plain opening out on the other side.

There are no hotels here, no souvenir shops. There are a couple of bars on the square, the church, and stone streets where in the late afternoon nobody passes at all. This is the Mallorca that still runs at its own pace.

A few minutes away are Sa Pobla and Inca, with their weekly markets, and s'Albufera, the largest wetland in the Balearics and one of the finest places on the island for watching birds.

Perfectly placed

The whole island within reach

Being in the middle has one advantage: it makes no difference which way you want to go. The northern beaches are a quarter of an hour away, the Tramuntana half an hour, and Palma a little over half an hour by motorway.

Exploration

Four ways to spend the day

01

A morning in Palma

The cathedral, the old town, a lunch with no clock. Back in time for an afternoon swim.

02

The northern coast

The beaches of Muro and Alcúdia, miles of fine sand and shallow water. A stop in Pollença on the way home.

03

Into the mountains

The road to Lluc and the stone villages of the Serra de Tramuntana, a World Heritage Site. The drive back, unhurried.

04

Markets and villages

Fruit, vegetables and sobrassada at the market, lunch somewhere along the way, and the rest of the day at the finca.

Coming back to the quiet

The best part of being in the middle is the return. After the coast, the mountains or the market, the finca is still there: the garden, the pool and the silence of the countryside.
